ABSTRACT:
This paper examines several plausible conceptual Semitisms within Stoic logic and physics, such as, on the one hand, the partial equivalence of present and future tenses and the suppression of the verbal copula within the former, and, on the other hand, the omission of the verb to be within the latter. Amidst others, these remarkable conceptual motifs shape Stoic thought as somewhat “anomalous”—as both Émile Bréhier and Gilles Deleuze have rightly suggested—within the general history of philosophy. I shall attempt to show that comparative linguistics may, therefore, shed some light upon what might be labelled, in short, as the stoic “anomaly”.

Segovia RESUMEN: El presente artículo examina algunos posibles semitismos conceptuales inherentes al pensamiento estoico, tales como, de un lado, la relativa indistinción entre los tiempos verbales y la supresión de la cópula verbal en la lógica, y, de otro lado, la eliminación del verbo ser en la física; motivos, éstos, que, entre otros, dotan al pensamiento estoico de un carácter “anómalo” en el contexto de la historia general de la filosofía sobre el que, de Émile Bréhier a Gilles Deleuze, el pensamiento contemporáneo no ha cesado de preguntarse. Trataré, así pues, de mostrar que la lingüística comparada puede, a su vez, contribuir a explicar la “anomalía” estoica.
